Hello, sweet friends & brides-to-be! I have a really fun post for you today! It’s all about simple & easy tips and tricks to make your wedding day shine!
When I have consultations with potential Brides & Grooms, I leave them with a sheet (whether they book us or not) with some helpful tips & tricks for their wedding day. I will admit, it’s a skinny list, because it doesn’t really dive into the ‘why’ of doing these things. So, here’s the ‘why’!
Most of these are near-effortless, multi-purpose, helpful for the day, and helpful afterwards, too! Most of these can add a sense of luxury to a day that you so deserve to be spoiled on. Having said that, all of these tips will directly correlate to the ‘getting ready’ slice of the day.
So, what are we waiting for?? Let’s get started!
#1. Ask for a room with a view (Or at least a window!)
You’ll be hard-pressed to convince me that window light isn’t the most flattering, most romantic light. It beats the heck out of dark, flat conference rooms, by a million miles! Sometimes, that’s where the venue’s wedding coordinator might have you prepare, and you might not even know that it’s not a room with a view. Asking about the room is the first step in the right direction.
A way around this, if there are no other options, is to create ‘mock’ Getting Ready photos near a window. Bring your lipstick and a vintage compact, and you’ve got the makings of a simple, gorgeous photo!
#2. Clean rooms are less distracting, and promote peace
And who doesn’t want some PEACE on their wedding day, when nerves are flying! Piggy-backing off #1, having a clean room polishes your photos, not to mention reduces stress and anxiety in the now. Delegate someone to tidy-up odds & ends, and then moving to the next part of your day is that much easier, too! (Everyone’s not making a mad dash to clean & collect things at once).
#3. Have ALL the details with YOU
Move over, Best Man. Your ring-bearing duties are transferred! It makes it easy on your photographer to take care of all the detail shots in one setting. As long as it doesn’t ‘spoil’ anything (sometimes the ring is a surprise), having everything important to you from your rings, flowers, perfume bottle, bracelets & necklaces, veil, shoes, and more, all in 1 spot, ensures that nothing is missed, and it can all be together in the same type of photos. Weddings can be GO-GO-GO, so keeping these things together at that point, in the beginning of the day, is the easiest way to go. (And don’t worry, Best Man, your duties can be restored before the ceremony!)
#4. Choose your signature wedding scent
Scent and memory are one of the most powerful connections, and intensify all the romantic memories of your wedding day, because you’ll have an almost-tangible feeling. Think of your mother’s perfume, and how it makes you feel when you catch a whiff of it. For me, the scent of furniture stores is SO powerfully nostalgic, it makes me feel like a little kid again (my parents owned one years ago). We still have the cologne that Nick wore on his wedding day, and he only wears it on date nights. DREAMYYYY! Choosing a signature perfume & cologne, especially for your wedding day, is one of the most powerful ways to capture the feeling. Include it alongside your wedding jewelry and keepsakes, and use it for date nights! (And it’s not just for women! Men can choose a cologne for the exact same reasons, and include it in *their* detail photos alongside their tie, watch, pocketsquares, etc.)
#5. Hooks & Hangers, unsung heroes!
A 2-in-1 suggestion! Having peel-off hooks ahead of time to hang dresses wherever you like is freedom! Your photographers might not have these, or enough for everyone in your wedding party.
And the skinny plastic hanger that’s supporting your gorgeous, expensive, new family heirloom wedding dress?? Check out the many, many hanger alternatives! Wooden hangers, personalized with your new last name, are gorgeous, and are one of the small things that shiny-up your photos. (They make sweet bridesmaids gifts, too!) And having a sturdy hanger minimizes the risk of the dress dropping (let’s be honest–those hangers are pretty frail!), and eliminates the risk of the hanger breaking and hurting someone.
#6. Something old, something new, something SATIN!
Are GIFTS your love language? Mine is! Are you stumped on a thoughtful bridesmaid’s gift? Not sure about what to wear while having your hair and makeup done? (“Wait–HOW do I get this shirt off without ruining my ‘do??”) Haven’t thought about these things at all? Consider the ADORABLE, forever-underrated satin robe! The touch of luxury and class you NEED! In my honest opinion, a bride and her tribe deserve to feel dreamy. They don’t have to be tacky–they can be cute and forever-wearable like the ones pictured below! Who wouldn’t want to sip their mimosa and curl their lashes in these?? I know I do!
Satin robes not your thing? An alternative is button-down shirts! Cute coordinating flannels? Comfy and cozy in chillier settings! The goal is to make getting out of what you’re wearing and into your gown effortless.
#7. Everyone needs to try everything on
AGAIN FOR THE PEOPLE IN THE BACK! Everyone (clap) needs (clap) to (clap) do this! Save some heartache, and make sure that everything comfortably zips & clips on E.V.E.R.Y.O.N.E., from Bride to Bridesmaids, to Flower girls, to Mama’s and Grandmama’s at least a week ahead of the wedding, when something can still be done about any issues. Make sure you can bend, and have room to breathe.
#8. Take it easy on your Pinterest Board
Ah, Pinterest, I love to hate to love you! Inspiration as far as the eye can see (or, scroll, actually) but if a bride pins with abandon, it can create SUCH unrealistic expectations. And unrealistic expectations yield disappointment. The last thing I, or those that love you, want for you on your wedding day, is to feel disappointed. Your wedding is a celebration of love, and you should be radiating. You shouldn’t be having your joy stolen by ‘wedding inspo’ of a wedding that is just plain DIFFERENT.
Too many mixed-up ideas from too many different weddings will seldom create a cocktail you’ll want to stick in your recipe book! So be extremely picky about what you pin, and requests that you make to your photographer (are your requests curbing their creativity??). Your wedding celebration is a snowflake (please don’t hate me for saying that–it’s a good thing!) and it’ll be photographed true to how it is, and all the effort you’re putting into it.
And there you have it!
